The walk begins on tarmac at the bridge by Lynwilg House, but soon joins a well-made estate vehicle track which climbs steadily but sinuously toward a broad bealach (a col or pass) in the Monadhliath Mountains. From here the walk ascends Gael-Charn Mor (824m), a Corbett (a Scottish hill between 2,500 and 3,000 feet in height) and returns by the same route. From early on the views begin to open up across the expanse of Strathspey, the Cairngorms and Glen Feshie to the south, growing increasingly spectacular as they add the northern panorama from the bealach onward. There are no navigational problems in good conditions, but careful map and compass work will be needed in bad visibility, which can occur quickly in these hills. Two Explorer maps are needed for this walk, but the 1:50,000 Landranger (35 – Kingussie & Monadhliath Mountains) is entirely adequate.
