Annan – Hecklegirth – Whinnyrigg – Summergate – Waterfoot – Annan

The Annan Shore Walk is a designated local walk from the hustle and bustle of Annan's High Street via a peaceful country road, down to and along the shore of the Solway Firth and then back into town. Walk 5773 follows the official route almost entirely. It is level and undemanding, though if you choose the Annan Merse option at Waymark 12, you should ideally be nimble-footed enough to avoid the tidal creeks and dubs, or salt-water pools.

Information for Dog Owners: dogs would need to be on the leash for the first part of this walk and for the final stages.

A very nice, quiet walk away from the busy road through Annan. Following the route guide, it was straight-forward for most of the way until coming back from the pipe-line to walk across the Merse, then it became interesting for finding the route. I would strongly recommend when you descend the steps (about 300 m from the pier pumping station) to make your way onto the right hand banking as quickly as possible. The route through the debris does not exist and the various water diversions make progress very difficult. The banking is an easy stroll but the next section of Merse is again difficult. There is a good path, with "footbridges", running about (100 m) from the field edge but the start of it was not obvious. It's all peaceful and pleasant, with lots of bird-song to accompany you along the route. The route back into town is a bit hit and miss, and it can be a weary pull back to civilisation, but it will certainly be done again, and the reverse will be considered.
