From Cockerham the walk soon arrives at the shore. Then passing the ruins of Cockerham Abbey and the feeding grounds of many species of birds, it turns inland along the River Lune for a tour of Glasson Dock, always an interesting hour or two. The return is overland using the little gem of the Lancaster Canal and a few field-paths.

Great walk but a couple of points to note. The section 13-14 is severely overgrown and tricky to navigate. The car park at Bolam is privately owned by the pub and holiday park. Do not park there as you will be at risk of being clamped.

We have just done this walk on a sunny May day and it was generally a pleasant experience. A few comments: At 2, when you get the top of the lane, do not walk across the lawn. There is a lawn and a scruffy, overgrown way ahead filled with broken down farming equipment. That is the way. At the end you will find the stile amongst the long grass and nettles. At 8 the faint path is no longer visible. Just cross the field making sure your direction is in a direction to the right of the house and you will be fine. 9. There are no longer stiles that we could see and went through the gates. When you emerge from the lane onto a field turn left. It is no longer a track, just follow the side of the wood and then at the end of the trees to the left follow the directions. I think some stretches of the walk could be quite wet underfoot in less sunny weather. It is a good walk and the stretches along the sea defences and along the canal from Glasson Dock we particularly enjoyed.

Completed this walk on 30/8/15 and thoroughly enjoyed. It was well signposted and although busy in places (it was a Bank Holiday) not unbearably so. Cafe in Glesson Dock was closing but there was an excellent static van with homemade cakes and very good value hot rolls. Highly recommend.

Just completed this walk starting at Thurnham Hall. We clocked 11.7 miles. The cafe in Glasson (by the harbour) was very welcome. One point of navigation I would add is that between 3 & 4, following the stile pictured, as detailed you follow the fence left, however there is another still before entering the garden of the house to be negotiated before you approach the next stile identified in 4. It may also be worth adding that the field entered at 3 is occupied by a herd of Llama, they didn't give us any trouble. The views across the bay were worth it. I would also ask if anyone has had any issues crossing the field by Jansons Pool, ie. any issues with tides?

I did a shorter version of this walk on 14 August, 2014, and much enjoyed it. However, in spite of what is shows on the map, there are no longer any public toilets in Cockerham. Sign of the times! Penny Pitty

Just done this walk in July 2012 in a mixture of wind, rain and bright sunshine. Good walk with no climbing involved. Good directions but crops in many of fields towards end of walk.

I've just returned from this walk (June 24th 2011)and my GPS tracker has it closer to 11 miles. A pleasant walk with a good pub lunch at the Conder Mill Hotel on the canal bank about a third of the way down. We did find that a couple of fields on the home stretch were planted and the path was obliterated - head for the pylon on the left was most helpful guide at this point.

We did this walk on Easter Sunday 2007 and enjoyed it greatly. We saw hares in the fields, swans and grebe on the canal and were lucky enough to catch some of the Maritime Festival in Glasson Dock. The stretch of canal towpath from Glasson was an absolute joy. Recommended!

4/30/2004 - Michael and Marian Vaughn

By bus from Preston (40 or 41 twice hourly) alight by the Craft Shop at Galgate which leads to the canal; after a mile take the Glasson Branch to the first bridge. Do not pass under it but find a stile on the right - you are now at Waymark 8. It adds about 2.5 miles but the walk is so lovely, especially round Cockerham Sands, that it is well worth it.
