Blantyre - Redlees Urban Park

The walk is in and around the newly formed Redlees Urban Park near Blantyre in South Lanarkshire. The park is quite compact and covers an area of 27 hectares. There is a pond that is formed from an old flooded quarry which overflows into the Rotten Calder River and there is an escarpment above the pond with nice views. The Rotten Calder River is actually quite a nice clean river; it got its name from a corruption of the old word for red, because of the red colour that the water picks up from the underlying bedrock. There is a great deal of wildlife in the area, including roe deer, badger, squirrel, heron, waxwings, greylag geese etc. In fact the last time that I was walking in this area, three roe deer walked across the path in front of me. The local Blantyre Cubs have erected many bird boxes and squirrel feeding stations in the area. There are good safe grit paths with signposts throughout the park. There are also many other dirt paths that can be explored, although some of these can be steep and quite dangerous.
