Alton, a town at the end of the railway line, surely not worth bothering with? Well, that depends on what you want out of a walk: rolling green hills, scenic views, cosy tea rooms? Believe it or not, these can all be found at some point along this walk. Although not a large town, it does have plenty of interesting places to explore, from historic streets and buildings situated near the River Wey to the nearby village of Chawton. The buildings you come across are a real assortment of historic and modern, well-kept and unkempt; from the grand house to the smaller terraced house, all have charm and character of their own. As well as these, more modern residential streets are criss-crossed on our journey through the town. For those unfamiliar with Alton, you will certainly come to feel you are more intimate with it.

England - South England - Hampshire - Town or city

4/27/2011 - Peter Lucas

My wife wanted to see Jane Austin's house, and this and the pub opposite were well worth a visit. The walk back over the fields was the most pleasant part of the walk, if not the easiest to follow. However, getting to Chawton was not so enjoyable; largely following "A" roads leaves a lot to be desired.

Having done this walk today I would personally suggest that anyone who wants to follow this walk in the future skip the loop from part 2 (turning right at the Eight Bells pub and head back to Tanhouse Lane onwards)to part 5 around the cemetery and college along the allotments as this is now not pretty. The paths are full of rubbish from fly-tippers and because of the housing estate there are no views of the Hampshire downs to see anymore so there's no real point or pleasure to this section. Also on point 12 where it says to follow arrows and marker-posts through fields and over stiles some of these are not very easy to follow because some of the markers are not there now but if you have an OS map follow that.
