Ireby - Ruthwaite - Uldale - Aughertree Fell

This is a great walk to do if you are staying near Ireby and takes you on a complete circuit of a few nearby villages, one of the best pubs in the area and also a minor fell top for some stunning views. The route starts off in the village centre, follows quiet country lanes and a public footpath to Ruthwaite and passes some small old quarry workings along the way. Ruthwaite is a tiny hamlet in a beautiful setting on the lower slopes of Binsey. After crossing fields to Uldale the route starts a bit of an ascent past the Snooty Fox Pub and hits the 300m contour fairly quickly for some breathtaking views over the whole area.

The route summits Aughertree Fell (the top is called Green How and is a listed Birkett Fell) and the views stretch as far as Scotland beyond the Solway Firth, round to Binsey, the towering peak of Skiddaw and the grassy fells near High Pike and Caldbeck. The descent takes you across Aughertree Fell past old quarry workings and a large Ancient Settlement and burial mounds from thousands of years ago. Aughertree is another tiny hamlet passed along the route before following quiet country lanes back to Ireby.
