The walk starts at a small car park just off the A627 (between Oldham and Ashton). It continues along the remains of a canal which has been filled in and converted to a bridleway and footpath. After leaving the disused canal it travels up past a local heritage centre via two rural lanes, which used to be heavily industrialised, before using several footpaths to reach open countryside. There is a climb up to the tower at the top of the hills, which is our destination. The return leg is along two rural lanes, one designated as a 'quiet' lane, then along part of the national cycle route to reach the edge of the country park. The final part of the walk goes roughly parallel with the River Medlock to the car park area. This walk crosses the Medlock several times. There are excellent views on the middle stretch of the walk i.e. from leaving the heritage centre to the cycle path. The majority of the walk is in countryside. There is a cafe and toilets at the heritage centre. This walk is classed as moderate because there are a number of muddy or boggy patches.

4th August 2021. A Good walk, but the bridge at number 9 was fenced off with high fencing. There was no visible alternative route signposts, and we had to cross the river over rocks to continue the walk, which may be difficult for some people. I'm not sure how long this part of the walk has been closed, as there is no reference to it on the review posted in April this year.

Thanks for the comment Mary. Just as an aside the trig point mentioned is passed on walk 8347. This is the area around Mossley.

April 2021 Can highly recommend this walk. Completed on a cold day in April, bright blue skies and a bitter wind, but sheltered until the Pike. It's worth a walk over to the trig point from Hartshead Pike as the view from here includes dovestones and surrounding area. It's a beautiful 360 degree view. Park Bridge is also fascinating.

Sep 2020.The footbridge at WM09 is closed. The alternate route is to continue down the road to cross the river. Turn left and walk up the narrow path to reach a kissing gate. Continue through the gate and follow the path slightly uphill to reach a wider path. Turn left and walk up the path to reach the bridge. Continue to follow the route from the bridge (between WM09 and WM10).
