Glen Esk - Loch Lee and Cairn Caidloch

From Invermark at the head of Glen Esk the route begins on a road and continues on a good vehicle track passing the tiny Loch Lee Parish Church, the ruined tower of Invermark Castle and then the ruins of Glenesk Old Parish Church and graveyard at the east end of Loch Lee. The track continues along the shore of the loch and then crosses a causeway at the western end to reach Inchgrundle Farm. On a warm sunny day you will likely find adders basking at the sides of the causeway. From Inchgrundle the route climbs quite steeply to the Mounth plateau following an old right-of-way which crosses the Mounth to Glen Clova. After 1km it leaves the right-of-way and a short pathless section that crosses a small stream joins a clear path leading to the summit of Burnt Hill, the highest point of the route. A rough vehicle track continues across the plateau to reach the trig pillar on Cairn Caidloch and then descends into Glen Effock to reach Gleneffock Farm. From the farm a metalled road leads to a footbridge across the North Esk and the main glen road is followed back to the car park.
