An excellent all year round walk with well used paths for all of the circular route making it very easy walking. It will be at its best in summer when there will be no muddy bits and the ground will be firmer, the flowers will be out, and the trees all in leaf. The route will take you along the Trent and Mersey canal towpath to Barnton on the outward part then a short connecting road will bring you to Saltersford Locks on the River Weaver. The return route is along the river towpath, which is part of the North Cheshire Way, where a nice fresh breeze will blow along the open Weaver valley. In summer you may encounter some farm animals, and there are no stiles, so the route is excellent for dogs. There is one small hill up over Saltersford canal tunnel, otherwise the route is flat. It is okay for buggies, but the two short flights of steps and the five kissing gates will make it a bit of a challenge for wheelchair users, even in summer. This walk includes instructions for moored canal and river boat users.

It is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs, okay for buggies but very difficult for wheelchairs. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best in winter or after heavy rain, and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. On your route there are several bench seats along the canal towpath, but no other facilities except for the toilets and excellent food at the pub at the start and finish; if you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with your drink; an excellent finish to a good walk.
