The walk goes north from the town using tracks and some lanes to reach Buttstead Wood, before a return mainly along a disused railway line. There are very few stiles and relatively little climbing. At points there are good views of some well-known Lakeland fells from an unfamiliar direction.
I would point out that a quarter of the walk is on lanes where there was almost no traffic; this was forced upon us as the fields to the east that we planned to cross were so flooded that we could not even reach the bridges across Kirkby Pool! I am sure, though, that you will find that our improvisation gives a good day out.
