This is a grand eight-mile route around England's deepest lake. The route starts at the National Trust Car Park in Wasdale Head and follows an easy path down to the lakeshore, then heads south-west along the bottom of the famous Wastwater Screes. Towards the end of the lake the path all but disappears and the ground becomes considerably rocky, with some large boulders to navigate around. Do take extra care in cold or wet conditions as the rock can be very slippery.

After the rocky scrambling the route joins a regular path again and follows a short section of the River Irt before heading through Low Wood back to the lakeshore. This footpath terminates at the minor road along the lake and the remainder of the walk is along the road, but there are many detours down to the lakeshore, giving the walker some of the best views the Lake District has to offer.
