This is a good little afternoon filler. The confluence of the rivers is a fine picnic spot and the water from the South Tyne gently tumbles into the North Tyne, which has cut a deeper bed. There are numerous tracks following the river, some of which may be difficult if the water is high. The banks here often undergo drastic changes during the winter months too.
The area beyond Waymark 4 is a bird sanctuary and quickly enters private land with difficult access. Having climbed to the old railway track (Waymark 6), it is possible to continue north for a short way to get glimpses of the wide valley gorge below, but a fence soon bars the way to the private land and the only way out is to retrace your steps.
Please note this route has been shortened to take into account dangerous path erosion at certain points along the Tyne.
