The Hunter Valley is famous for two things, coal and wine. It's a beautiful rural part of New South Wales, with a fair share of agriculture as well. This walk starts from a lay by on the Watagan Creek Road, 18km from the small township of Laguna. It follows the Great North Walk across a rural landscape and then up the escarpment between the Watagan and Congewai valleys through gorgeous eucalypt forests to a great lookout spot with fine views over the Congewai Valley. Laguna is on the tourist route to the wineries around Broke (some of the best in the Hunter), and Wollombi a bit further along the road has a couple of good ones too. The walk makes a nice half day detour on any trip from Sydney to the Hunter, and is a great introduction to Aussie bushwalking. On this walk we saw Kookaburras and my first wild Wombat
