Walk across the valley from one side to the other, returning by different paths. Some road-walking is required on the quiet, single-track roads typical of the area.

By the simple nature of crossing a valley it is a down - up - down - up route, no parts being particularly steep, so most walkers should not have any problems with the route, depending on how much you enjoyed the hospitality of the Barley Mow for the return part.

Some paths can be tricky to find and access through Alton Mill Farm (Waymark 10) is often made difficult; at time of walking the farmer had placed a heavy cast-iron trough against the wooden gate for the path.
The railway crossing at Waymark 8 should now be approached with more caution, as this line is now used by the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway to provide limited passenger and steam services between Belper and Duffield.

The route takes you through the yards of small cattle farms which are extremely filthy. Gaiters are a must. I would also recommend parking somewhere on the route other than at the top of Alport.
