Amberley would make a good day excursion from London, maybe with a visit to Arundel later. There's plenty to do, including a walk along the River Arun and a visit to the fine outdoor museum. There are good eating places, including the Bridge Inn, which does good pub food. This walk starts near Amberley Station and visits Bignor Roman Villa, with its world-renowned mosaics. Along the river at first, then through fields, woods and charming, rarely visited Sussex villages, with a bracing walk up onto the downs on the way back. There are pubs at Bury and Horton along the way and a church with a 12th Century tower at Bury. Part of the walk coincides with a new long-distance route, The Sussex Literary Trail. Allow an extra hour and a half if visiting the Roman villa. Mention is made of a short cut, which shortens the walk by a mile or so but misses out the villa.
