This walk begins with a memorable stretch of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Footpaths through arable land and pastures are mostly well-signposted and maintained while views, if distant, are there in clear weather. With very little height gain and a pub halfway round, the walk is relatively undemanding.

Jim Grindle should be awarded a 'gold star' for this walk as it was one of the muddiest I have ever encountered. I think it is fair to say that the only 'non muddy' bits were the surfaced roads and lanes - even the canal tow path was a bed of mud. Sorry to say that what should have been an enjoyable walk soon turned into a feat of endurance!

The boat lift was interesting and canal towpath gave pleasant walking. However the stretch from Little Leigh around to Anderton was a bit dull - traversing lots of fields and walking on roads. It wouuld be a better walk if you shortened that element and incorporated a walk through Marbury Country Park which is nearby, with a lake, woodland and riverside walking.
