This region of Snowdonia to the north-west of Bala is largely ignored and therefore much quieter than many other areas. This is the appeal and Arenig Fawr, the principal summit of the area, is the perfect place to appreciate its beauty. This circular route starts with a level walk along a road close to the southern shore of Llyn Celyn before starting to climb up past a small reservoir and on to the summit of Arenig Fawr, which is one of thirteen summits in the range over 2,000ft. There are extensive views all round on a clear day, reaching to the coast in the north and taking in the Arans and Cadir Idris in the south, truly wonderful in a relaxing way. The return follows an old drovers' route back to the start. In parts there are no paths to follow, but navigation is fairly easy in clear weather, though when the mists come down good navigational skills are required.
