Overrun by Picts and other marauding tribes in 181 and 367 and sacked by the Vikings in 875, the Roman town of Luguvallium, nowadays Carlisle, only became part of England after the Norman Conquest. There followed centuries of border raids which saw Carlisle regularly pass between England and Scotland. It was besieged in 1644-1645 during the English Civil War, the Royalist garrison falling to the Scots; and in 1745 the town surrendered to Bonnie Prince Charlie.

This is a gentle saunter around the historic and attractive centre of Carlisle, the county town of Cumbria, with an optional extension through Bitts Park and along a short section of Hadrian's Wall Path by the River Eden. Visiting castle, cathedral and / or museum en route would enhance your visit but extend the time needed to at least half a day.
