The Forest of Dean is a special place, described as 'a land apart, between two rivers', the Severn to the east and the Wye to the west.

This walks begins at St Briavels Castle, which was the administrative centre of the Forest of Dean from the 12th Century, when it became a Royal Hunting Forest.

The walk takes you through ancient woodlands that were used to build ships for the Royal Navy and you pass by spots where there is evidence of charcoal-burning pits from the era when the Forest of Dean was a centre for iron ore production.

This walk features in the 'Pathways' book - for more information click on the link on the Walkingworld homepage.

The morse family did this walk on the 21/12/11 after a very heavey rain fall. It was a fantastic walk but I would say it is probably a hard walk especailly if you do it this way round. Be very careful at point 4 as the fields you cross can get very wet and slippy, me and my son took a good tumble here. The walk takes in some lovely woodsand some fantastic senery. Overall a very good walk but at point 8 there is a big climb and from point 21 there is a very steep asent to the top of st briavels common (Iam quite fit but even I needed oxygen at the top -also the path near the top gets very narrow and you are very high up.)The kids loved it and slept very well that night.
