Back Bay – Gavin Maxwell Memorial – Monreith – White Loch of Myrton – Drumtroddan Stones – Back Bay

This is an interesting walk of great variety set in The Machars of Wigtownshire. It includes a beautiful bay, the partly ruined Kirkmaiden Church in its seaside setting, the bronze otter memorial to Gavin Maxwell (author of 'Ring of Bright Water' and much else), a view of his family's Monreith House and a stroll around the picturesque White Loch of Myrton. There is also an optional extension to Drumtroddan standing stones, believed to date from 2000BC.

Please note that there are no refreshments available on this walk, but just up the road from Monreith at 375402 is the admirable Monreith Wildlife Park (01988-700217), which has a cafe offering drinks and snacks. A visit to see the animals after your walk is highly recommended.

Information for Dog Owners: subject always to the normal precautions to be observed by dog-owners when walking in sheep country, this walk is thought suitable for biddable dogs.

Other walks starting and ending at Back Bay are: 3785 and 4874.

This is not 4.7 miles in length, it is 7.4 miles. We enjoyed it but would probably not have done it had we realised how far it actually was. A thoroughly enjoyable & scenic walk with lots of variety on the way.
