Thornton Reservoir is a small reservoir situated in the National Forest near the village of Thornton in Leicestershire. Originally built in 1854, it has a surface area of 300,000 sq m and is 2.45 miles around it's perimeter
Since 1997 the reservoir and the surrounding land has been open to the public. Facilities include a small visitor centre, a woodland walk and a sculpture trail.
Perched above the reservoir you'll find the Church of St. Peter's. Of medieval origin - dating from the 13th century it is Grade 1 listed, its contents are of great historical interest including Medieval stained glass, linen fold pews from 1560 and a working clock which is over 400 years old and a mid-Victorian organ recently completely refurbished.
Our walk starts at something quite rare these days - a FREE carpark. The path we take is wide and clear through the woods of Bagwood Heath, then it's over railway lines into Thornton before descending to, then walking around the reservoir. From here it's up to St. Peters then across then across fields and back across the railway lines to return to the start.
All paths are clear and pretty obvious.
