Since this hike starts and finishes less than twenty kilometres from Segovia, it would combine well with time spent in that famous and fascinating city, noted for its Roman aqueduct.
At the foot of Sierra de Guadarrama, the hike begins by following the course of the Piron River, maintaining a height of about fifty metres above it in close wooded country. Later we emerge from the narrow gorge and descend through oak woods to the now wide Piron river valley. We next follow the river to its junction with the River Viejo. At this point we could attempt to visit the ancient hermitage of Santiaquito built into the cliffs and the cave of La Vaquera, which gives access to a vast underground labyrinth of tunnels and caves (not tested by us!!!). At this river junction it is possible to continue NW, still following the river to pass an abandoned house and reach the tiny hamlet of Penasrubias, returning the same way. This is not part of this description and would add 5km to the route. From the river junction this hike turns NE initially to follow the course of the River Viejo, through wonderfully grand countryside with varied flora and fauna. Eventually reaching a country road, unfortunately there is no alternative (unless you are a group with two cars or can cadge a lift) but to follow it south back to the start, passing the little village of Losana de Piron.
