This is a pleasant family walk in the Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve, near Golspie in East Sutherland. It's partly through an open Scots pine wood, 100 years old and partly along the shore of Loch Fleet, a sea loch. In the wood and on open ground you may see squirrels, a range of butterflies and ospreys; and this reserve is noted for having 90% of the country's one-flowered wintergreen.
Loch Fleet, the estuary of the River Fleet, is a sheltered haven for a variety of seabirds and seals, otters and salmon may also be seen.
In parts the path has been eroded and there is some walking on the pebbly foreshore, so you might find boots more comfortable. Dogs are welcome. Refreshments, shops and toilets are in nearby Golspie.
