This walk has it all: hills, moorland, pastoral views and a riverside stroll – all combined with some really spectacular scenery. Although it contains a fairly steep section, it is worth it for the great panoramic views it provides.

The walk starts in the centre of Ballater as an almost level stroll past a park and open farmland. It then rises fairly steeply through woodland until it reaches open moorland, without a trace of habitation in sight. After passing close to a radio and TV mast, it rises a little more then dips slightly, giving views to the north-east. A further, shorter rise provides more spectacular panoramic views over Glen Gairn, upper Deeside and the hills beyond.

The descent then starts and the route reaches the tree line, going down through open woodland to reach grassy fields. Passing through these leads back to the western end of the Pass of Ballater.

Finally the walk crosses the A93 and follows a footpath along the side of the River Dee, before returning to the centre of Ballater.

A great walk that ticks all the boxes. The long steep pull, up onto the moor is more than compensated for by the wonderful panoramic views that are revealed from the highest point of the walk on the relatively flat moor in this beautiful eastern area of the Cairngorms. Directions are spot on. Well done Ian. Alan Anderson
