Barley, Pendle Water and Newchurch

The walk goes to the east of Barley, away from the more popular areas and through some beautiful pastures. It is quite a hilly walk even though it does not climb any notable hill and has a sting in the tail, in that there is a climb towards the end. Given its location, it affords spectacular views of Pendle and surrounding Pennine fells and has woodland and riverside sections as well. There is a tea room part way round and toilets in Newchurch a little further on. Everybody in our Ramblers Group who did this walk enjoyed it thoroughly. Note that a long stretch of what shows on the OS maps as farm tracks has been surfaced.

Set off in misty conditions but it cleared up and finished in radiant sunshine! To clear up Hamish's observations last time... at WP8 Hamish followed a slight trail round the back of the garden to a fence, but he missed the simple step stile immediately after the cattle grid before the farm. I know, because I did the same and a kind lady put me right. The track does try to take you to the fence so perhaps an extra instruction is needed. At WP14, Hamish obviously missed the stile in the wall and carried on to the road on the wrong side of the wall. You need to keep an eye out for it, once clear of the trees. At WP 25, Hamish reached the road. If he had carried on 20m on the road then turn left down a farm track, he would have come to a gate going right. There are two options here, but the easiest is following the line of the telegraph poles across boggy ground and then continuing down the wall to the step stile. Jim's route takes you further left by about 50-100m. All told a good walk. A cup of tea at Noggarth Top is 80p. Great value and a pleasing walk.

At stage 8,it is very unclear where to go.Footpath sign points up behind house, but no stile,had to clamber over wall. At No 14,you have to go through 2 fields with gates to reach road. At No25, at top of steps there is a gate on left,but not one close by. So,carrying on there is a gate further on with another almost immediately. Going through both of these,you come out onto the road.Unable to follow directions from there. Had to walk down main road to Barley.

Very enjoyable walk, with great views. Directions were very clear. Even in August was muddy in parts so make sure you wear boots.

This walk exceeded all my expectations. It has got the lot, an ever changing vista emerging around each bend with Pendle Hill in the background overlooking the beautiful countryside.
