A nice ramble through the farming area just to the north east of Darlington. As well as a pleasant stroll alongside a river, the route also includes great walking along ancient enclosed trading lanes.
Barmpton from where the walk starts, is a one way in and one way out village. From here the route initially tracks the winding River Skerne upstream through pleasant grassy meadows to intersect the ancient Ketton Packhorse Bridge. The walk then leaves the river and rises gently to pass by Ketton Hall and then on into the farming hamlet of Newton Ketton, where the route intersects the old trading routes of Salters Lane and then the long Catkill Lane. A nice stroll through open fields is followed by a little road-walking. The final short lap is through fields for a return into Barmpton Village.
