The walk starts at the transport interchange in the centre of Barnsley and goes out northwards to the River Dearne. A very short distance on the river is followed by a large old mill dam and an old canal towpath for about 2km. On leaving the old canal, the route goes south, under the Barnsley to Leeds rail line and into Gawber, on the outskirts of Barnsley. Onward through fields to Higham, then under the M1 Motorway to reach Dodworth via good field-paths, towpath and over an old colliery waste tip.
