Note: July 2013 - the steps at waymark 3 have been damaged by overflowing water and have been temporarily closed. The alternative is to continue ahead past the waterfall, out to the road and follow this up to the right. Rejoin the route at waymark 4.
The monastery of Baume les Messieurs and the deep valley in which it sits are rightly famous. However, it can be difficult to explore as the deep valleys and cliffs which gave it security in the past can make walking difficult. This route allows you not only to explore the attractive valley but also to climb out of it using a rock staircase built by the monks, to explore their forest and fields above the valley and get some great views. The climb up the valley is steady and reasonably easy and is broken up with waterfalls and cascades. There are no difficult climbs; the route was made for pack-horses.

There are two café-restaurants in Baume and a café at the entrance to the caves, as well as a hotel and restaurant when you get to the top of the Crancot Ladder. Baume can be busy in high summer and parking could be difficult at weekends. Alternative start points are at Waymark 3, which would have the advantage of leaving the pretty valley walk through the cascades till the end, although parking here is fairly restricted; or at Waymark 12, where there is plenty of parking just along from the junction towards Granges. From Baume turn sharp right in the village centre following signs to Crancot. The road has a couple of hairpin bends but isn't too steep.
