Beamish - No Place - Craghead - Edmondsley - Waldridge Fell - West Pelton - Beamish
An interesting ramble through the rolling countryside between Chester-le-Street and Stanley that reveals good panoramic views. The walk, through a former coalmining area, features several scenic woods and wooded gullies. En route the walk passes the northern fringe of the unique lowland Waldridge Fell.
This undulating walk starts from near the entrance to the famous open-air Beamish Museum and heads south to pass through the illogically named village of No Place. A long length of lane-walking follows that presents good panoramic views before the route passes through the pleasant South Stanley Woods. From here the walk progresses through the Middles area of South Stanley, then continues onto Craghead where the route rises to reveal good views before descending to Sacriston Woods. A stiff climb through the wood ends with a flattish farm track walk to Edmondsley. From here the route passes along the northern fringe of Waldridge Fell to enter the Congburn Plantation, where a direction change leads the route north through a series of fields. The walk next passes through the Fox and Parrot Nature Reserve in Twizzel Wood and then continues along lanes, field tracks and a pleasant wood for a return to Beamish.
