Locals refer to de syv fjell (the seven mountains) when they talk about the mountains surrounding Bergen, but there's no agreement on which mountains these seven are, as there are in fact at least nine mountains and peaks in the area. However, Fløyen, almost in the city centre and easily reached by funicular, is on everybody's list.
This route takes you from the cruise ship berth past the medieval buildings of Bryggen to the bottom station of the funicular. In the late Middle Ages the Hanseatic League established the German Kontor in Bryggen (the waterfront), which became a thriving centre of international trade. The characteristic parallel rows of buildings, with their seaward-facing gables, were placed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980 and are well worth exploring.
The funicular runs all day every day and takes about six minutes to reach the upper station 320 metres above the city. The queues do build up as the morning wears on, so it is best to get up and get going to avoid a boring wait: an hour can make all the difference. For the best view on the funicular, sit at the lower end. From the top station a network of trails fans out through an undulating landscape of hills, woods and lakes and there are many possible walks.
The one described passes one lake before climbing to Brushytten, the 'soda pop hut', a refreshment kiosk open on Sundays. The route then leads by a second, larger lake before wending its way through the forest back to the upper station. Surprisingly, some of the paths have streetlights! This is because they are used as illuminated ski trails in the winter. During a typical full day in port you should have plenty of time to enjoy this highly recommended walk as well as explore Bryggen and possibly visit the famous fish market nearby.
