The walk provides a pleasant variety of woods and grassland and takes us up from the town into Northchurch Common, overlooking the Bulborne Valley. The woods have a mixed variety of beech, ash and hazel and some oak and Northchurch Common can offer fine views over their canopy. In midsummer the grass on the common is usually scorched in the heat and there are often people playing frisby or some other game enjoying the open ground to the full. The return route brings us gently back to the town along the relaxing Grand Union Canal. The canal offers a quiet way into Berkhamsted itself and we finish by the ruins of Berkhamsted Castle, where William the Conqueror was once offered the crown of England.

Brilliant walk with nice woodland, stroll along the canal and see the castle (the 86 year old caretaker gives history lessons of the castle in a little room to the left of the on site house at certain hours). Well described walk. We had our little picnic we had in our backpack sat by the canal.
