This is a quiet linear walk along the River Exe from Bickleigh to the ancient town of Tiverton. The walk takes in the best of the countryside, like kingfishers along the water and the rabbits in the woods and much more wildlife along the way. The walk is mostly through woodland and open fields, following the meandering River Exe through its twists and turns from village to town.
The village of Bickleigh is very picturesque with its quaint pubs and the Devonshire Centre, with its craft and giftshops and also a cafe. Alongside the Centre is the Devon Railway Centre which gives train rides along the Exe Valley. It also provides eating in the surroundings of the restored Victorian Station.
Further on in Tiverton is the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life which covers agricultural, transport and local history, also including clockmaking. Tiverton is a very busy market town which stands on two rivers, the Lowman and the Exe; these were once used to power the woollen mills. The presence of the textile industry is still in Tiverton with Heathcoat, a lace factory which has been in operation since 1816. Tiverton also has the new Pannier Market which is built on the original site of an old Roman encampment; this is an up-to-date modern market. Also in Tiverton is the Grand Western Canal with its horse-drawn barges.
In Tiverton are plenty of cafes and pubs for refreshment and some nice walks further along the canal and in the parks.
