Our walk starts and finishes at the Birkenhead Park visitors' pavilion, where there are toilets, park information, a small exhibition area and a cafe. Our route takes us around the lake in the upper park and follows the perimeter road to the gates between Kemp's House and the Castellated Lodge, with an opportunity to visit the shops, cafe and pubs in nearby Claughton Village.

We then walk through a pleasant rural area, eventually crossing Wirral Ladies Golf Course to walk towards Storeton Ridge. Here are views across the Wirral Peninsula and Dee Estuary to the hills of North Wales. We pass down through more modern housing, with shops and pub close by, then up towards the top of the ridge once more, where we find the imposing late 19th Century church of St Saviour's.

We pass 19th Century villas and houses on our way into the centre of Oxton Village, which is a conservation area. It is well worth taking taking time out to look at the village centre, which has a host of family businesses including food shops, gift shops, cafes and restaurants, newsagents, chemist, post office and pub.

Leaving the centre of the village we get good views of the Liverpool World Heritage Waterfront with the city rising behind, then we pass Christ Church, a large early 19th Century sandstone parish church and beyond, the Williamson Art Gallery, free admission and open seven days a week, which has both permanent and changing exhibitions, as well as public toilets. We enter Birkenhead Park by the gate beside the Italian Lodge, passing the wildlife pond and around the lower lake with views of the Swiss bridge, past the boathouse and back to our start point.
