This is a challenging walk in an area seemingly little-used by walkers for some reason. There are plenty of paths which are mostly easy to find, following very close to the line shown on the map. Many of the paths just need to be walked more often. One section had a stile missing in a recently replaced run of fencing, though this may be 'work in progress' yet to be finished. A good standard of map-reading is required for this walk, though if following the directions in the guide you should keep the correct line.
There are several descents and climbs, some quite steep, though not over long distances. Some areas can become quite boggy as I noticed after walking to photograph. I had to modify my planned route to avoid flooded field drains after several days of heavy rain.
The pub used on this walk is the Rose & Crown in Middle Mayfield. There is a sign requesting muddy boots be removed or covered. They open daily between 12 noon and 2pm except Monday and 7 - 11pm except Sunday. The only hand-pump beer offered was Marston's Pedigree when walked. The choice of food offered on the menu was adequate and reasonably priced. Outside there are a few bench tables; signs are displayed stating that only food purchased from the pub may be consumed at them.
