This circular walk begins and ends at the railway station serving the Strathspey Steam Railway in Boat of Garten and makes initial use of the tarmac-surfaced Sustrans cycle route No 7, which runs through the village. Broad forestry roads then take the walker through well-established forest on the west side of the A9 before dropping down to picturesque Avielochan and returning to Boat of Garten via more woodland and a section of The Speyside Way long-distance walking route. There are excellent views across Strathspey to the Cairngorms when dropping down to Avielochan and the walking is straightforward, but three potentially dangerous crossings of busy roads must be negotiated with great care, especially the one at Avielochan (Waymark 8).
