Bolton Park - Valley of Desolation - Simon's Seat - Bolton Park

Walk through the place with probably Britain's most inappropriate name, 'The Valley of Desolation', a well-known beauty spot with a fine stream and superb waterfalls - beautiful, not desolate. Leave the valley to enter the open moor and walk upwards to the well-known local beauty spot known as Simon's Seat (485 metres). From here enjoy excellent views of Parcevall Hall, Grimwith Reservoir, Troller's Gill and the River Wharfe. Next drop down to this most magnificent of Yorkshire Dales rivers and walk along its bank to Strid Wood. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, rich in flora and fauna, but do not attempt to leap the river; many folk have died here!

Lovely walk, BUT - NOT SUITABLE FOR DOGS! The section from Bolton Abbey to Howgill (via Simon's Seat) - points 1 to 26 - are on the Bolton Estate where dogs are not permitted at all, not even on a lead according to the many signs along the route.

Great walk. We like to bring visitors to take this trek as you get many different Yorkshire scenes in one journey!

Good walk. We varied it slightly by reversing it and walking up the west bank of the Strid and crossing back over and rejoining the walk at Barden Bridge, in order to find this Geocahche http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=25b1d78e-2118-42fe-8499-34c66a6ba027
