From the centre of Braemar the walk follows a narrow path along the west bank of the Clunie Water downstream for 1.5km to meet the river Dee. It then follows the south bank of Dee upstream for 2km before crossing a road and entering the Birkwood. The route now follows the blue waymarked route as it meanders across the heather clad moorland with scattered birch trees. At the far end of the moor the route turns east and contours across the lower slopes of Morrone for 1.5km on a good path with superb views all the way to reach a seat at a view point. From here it is all downhill to the village passing a scenic little duck pond on the way.
