An undulating hike that crosses the high ridge between the valleys of the Stockley Beck and the River Deerness. This slightly challenging walk features a railway path, woodland, fields and quiet minor roads. The views from the ridge reveal outlooks of the rolling County Durham countryside to both the north and the south.

From the car park on the Auckland Way Path located in the village of Brancepeth, the walk travels along a section of the railway path before entering a long, narrow wood. The route then intersects a surfaced lane, from where the route starts the ascent to the ridge that separates two valleys of the Stockley Beck and the Deerness River, from where great views are revealed looking north through the heart of County Durham. The descent off the ridge involves mainly field- and lane-walking before a stroll through a delightful wood delivers you to the valley bottom. The return leg involves a long pull up out of the valley through woods and fields to the ridge at Brandon Lane, from where there are equally great views, this time looking south across the Stockley and Wear Valleys. A final descent through fields and then a minor road returns you to the car park at Brancepeth Village.
