A reasonably easy walk with only a few short climbs and descents of any note, much of the route is reasonably level, following field-paths and tracks. Some short sections of road-walking are required, mostly around Brassington. The route has several areas with good views, with Carsington Reservoir visible in full from Carsington Pasture. On the return there are views over Thorpe Cloud towards Dove Dale and Ilam from around Kniveton.
Some areas can be confusing, with paths not being quite where shown on the map. I think I found the correct access and turn points. The problem with some parts is that there are many paths in a small area - it can be confusing.
The pub used on this walk is the Red Lion Inn in Hognaston. This is a typical unspoilt village pub, welcoming walkers. They appreciate muddy boots being covered or removed. The menu is a little pricey, though good value for the meals offered. There is a good choice of more reasonably priced sandwiches and baguettes. There is a good choice of beers on offer, with several from a local brewery (Derby Brewing Company) not encountered by me before; they were well worth trying.
