There is a picnic site at the start of the route, at the old (pedestrians only) Bridge of Avon (pronounced 'Awn'). A climb of 2km through pines takes you on to the open moor for the rest of the walk to Dorback Lodge. On the moor, deer and buzzards may be seen and you pass several old bothies. Paths are good and there are fine views all the way on the moor. On two occasions a burn has to be forded.
Dorback Lodge used to be a shooting base on the Revack Estate (see Walks 4296 and 4297) but has been empty since the 1960s, when the shooting moved to Revack. It has been acquired by French owners and renovation seems to be in progress in 2007.
