Few people object to walking over a railway bridge and personally I don't mind crossing a bridge over a main road too much. This is just as well, as this walk in the South Downs encircles part of the busy A23 and crosses it twice, as well as the London to Brighton railway line. The views are good and varied and it's dry underfoot. There's a visit to a unique war memorial to the Indian WW1 dead, known as the Chattri (Chattri = the umbrella: a reference to its shape).
The Plough Inn, which serves food, within the smart village of Pyecombe, can be visited halfway round, or it can be made the starting and finishing point.
