From the car park we start off down the road before bearing right to walk through wide open Alpine-style terrain. Once we have correctly identified the fingerpost we bear off south to walk across grassland before entering tall pinewoods. Now our way meanders through the forest until we locate the rather run-down refuge. More forest walking brings us to an attractive but unwelcome climb of about 500m in length to reach a track above. From here we meander past the mirador (lookout point) before following a delightful forest footpath taking us through rocky defiles, across dry riverbeds and eventually out into more open country. The last part is along wide tracks with marvelous scenery until we finally drop down into the picturesque village of Palomera.
