The area above Slad is characterised by hills and deeply cut valleys through which tiny streams run, with woodland covering the tops of the hills and wildflower grasslands sloping to the valley bottoms. It's a small-scale, intimate landscape, well worth exploring at a slow, relaxed pace to appreciate the birds, wildflowers and the beauty of this natural area.
The walk starts by going down through a wooded area and up the other side. It's a steep climb, but it's followed by a long, fairly level stretch along the edge of woodland, with occasional glimpses of the valley below.
Later the walk goes steeply downhill to reach a lovely grassy valley through which a tiny stream flows. This is a great place for picnic. After a further long climb through woodland, there's another easy stretch before a gradual descent to the unspoilt grassland around Snows Farm. Then it's a gentle climb back to Bulls Cross.
