Taking the half-hourly funicular up from Poncebos, we begin by making our way the short distance to the little hamlet of Bulnes. Surrounded by the most breathtaking scenery, we shall ascend to Bulnes Arriba or El Castillo and from this wonderful old place we shall make a steep descent to rejoin the track onto which we emerged from the funicular. Now we have the sheer wonder of the descent that follows the course of the plunging Rio Texu to where it meets the Rio Cares and from where the classic Cares Gorge hike begins.

We can end here and simply return to the funicular car park, but this hike now continues upwards on a quiet tarmac lane twisting and turning to reach the charming high village of Camarmeña. From here we can contemplate the Naranjo before a stunning descent through woods and fields ablaze with colour in spring, to the road near Poncebos. We have only a short stretch of road to return to the car park.

Did this walk in June. Unfortunately had to do this at a weekend, would recommend a week day. Took the rail up to Bulnes, which has a number of little restaurants, and walked up to the next village, stunning views. On the way down we saw a wild pig with one piglet, made our trip! The walk down from the terminus was fantastic, but hard on the knees. I needed my poles.
