Burford is a beautiful, old Cotswold town on the site of a fortified ford which crossed the River Windrush in Anglo-Saxon times. The broad main street slopes gently down to the river, which is full of shops, pubs and places to eat, all of which seems to have changed little since Tudor times.

The walk winds its way around the streets of Burford before heading across the fields to Shilton. This is a much smaller and less well-known Cotswold village, but equally beautiful in an idyllic setting, with a stream flowing through the centre of the village, across the road and into a pond.

The route back descends the Windrush Valley to Widford, yet another small Cotswold village, then follows the meandering river back to Burford. There are good tracks and paths throughout the entire walk, making it very easy to navigate.

Almost didn't do this walk in view of the comments about the high stiles. However I am 5ft 4ins and got over fairly easily. Otherwise a beautiful walk with lovely views of beautiful English countryside.

Did this walk in early August. Instructions were excellent and dropping down to Widford from Step 23 was beautiful. Think it would be tough going in winter/spring because the walk crosses a number of fields.
