An interesting walk in the Derwentside area of County Durham. The route through rolling countryside links several villages and takes in glorious railway paths and delightful woodlands. A feature of the walk is the visit to Pontop Fell with its great panoramic views and to take a close up look at the TV mast on the Pike.

From Burnopfield the route descends quite steeply to intersect the Derwent Walk Railway Path. After a short but very pleasant walk along the railway path the route then starts to climb up through a long deciduous wood to Dipton. From here there is a short steep walk up wooded slopes onto Pontop Fell, the highest point of the walk where the TV mast is sited. The route then descends from the small fell down through open fields to pass through the adjoining villages of Catchgate, Anfield Plain and New Kyo to intersect the Consett and Sunderland Railway Path. The path leads the walker to the outskirts of Stanley before heading north to pass through Tanfield Lea, Tantobie and Hobson Golf Course. The final lap explores the delightful woods high above Burnopfield before descending steeply back to the start point.
