The walk starts at the village of Burston, famous for its 'strike school'; it crosses fields, goes along tracks and country roads to the pretty village of Gissing.
The old school at Burston is now a museum and is known as the 'Strike School'. In the 1900s Tom and Kitty Higdon became teacher and headmistress of the school. The village folk at that time lived in cramped houses on very low wages. Tom Higdon joined the Trade Union Movement. He and his wife fought for better conditions for the parents of the children they taught. However, the governors of the school objected and sacked the Higdons. The parents and children refused to have other teachers and a battle ensued, with the Higdons eventually winning in 1939, making it the longest running strike in British history.
