The walk starts in Caldbeck, the birthplace and final resting-place of the famous John Peel, beside the river from which the community takes its name. We climb through woodland up the side of the valley to an excellent viewpoint with a vista of the Lake District fells before descending, still in woodland, to the confluence of the Cald Beck and River Caldew at Watersmeet.

The route then lies mostly by the river to Hesket Newmarket, whose market was new when its charter was granted in 1751. Today it is an attractive village centred round a wide street and village green with many 18th Century buildings.

The return is much more open and so has wider views. The scenic climax comes near the end with a visit to the waterfalls at The Howk, where the river surges through a ravine carved in the limestone, guarded by the romantic ruin of a bobbin mill.

Did this walk with a group last week, perfect for non-walkers! Sadly the tea rooms have vanished save in Caldbeck and nearly all the kissing gates have been replaced with normal gates. Clear directions made for an easy and enjoyable walk.

April 2014 - a lovely walk with a choice of cafes en-route! The trees to the right of the path between WP2 & 3 have been felled opening up magnificent views towards the northern Lakeland Fells. At WP8 don't be tempted to shortcut back to the village, the last bit round by the bobbin mill is well worth the effort.
