Canillas de Albaida - Rio Cajula Valley Western Ridge - Rio Cajula Circular
Starting in the centre of Canillas de Albaida, the route drops down an ancient mule track to cross an old Roman bridge, then climbs on, still following the mule track through a mosaic of orchards, olive groves and wildflower-rich garrigue, to the crest of the ridge beyond. Descending again, we skirt around the head of a small side valley before winding up a higher ridge with splendid views of the mountains to east and north.
Entering the Natural Park, our route skirts through pinewoods, then drops into a steep, rocky valley watered by a tumbling tributary of the Rio Cajula. Passing crumbling cortijos and glorious displays of broom and cistus, rosemary and thyme, sage and oleander, it joins the Cajula and crossing to and fro on a series of stepping-stones, follows its rushing waters back to the Roman bridge before climbing up to Canillas de Albaida.
