Cannop Ponds - New Fancy - Churchill Enclosure - Parkend - Nagshead Reserve - Cannop Ponds

This part of the Forest of Dean has been 'improved' as far as the trails are concerned. You may notice that some of the tracks differ slightly from those marked on the map. The car park and viewpoint at New Fancy has also been adapted to allow for the extra visitors who come to see the new sculpture as well as the goshawks. The tracks are all good and there is only one stile, near the end of the walk. The beech-trees are particularly lovely in spring and autumn and the RSPB reserve at Nagshead is a birdwatcher's paradise in the spring.

The footpath at waymark 7-8 has been permanently diverted. Instead of heading between the buildings on the right, continue uphill on the stony track a short distance then take a signposted right turn between the trees that brings you out on the road opposite the primary school. Turn right there to pick up from the start of waymark 8.

Walked this walk today, a very pleasant walk through some lovely woodland with a good chance to see some wildlife. Despite heavy overnight rain the paths were dry and very easy to navigate. For dog owners (and others as well) you may be interested to know that after waypoint 8, as you walk into Parkend, before reaching the Fountain Inn, there is a very nice little cafe (part of the village Post Office) serving drinks and cakes, 100m on the left along New Road. The owners are very friendly and are happy to let well behaved dogs inside.
